How Much Does DPF Cleaning Cost? From £210 and What It Covers

DPF cleaning costs £210 at Auto-Cleanse for filters within 10 miles of Totnes, including collection and return. Car and van filters from further afield, or sent by post from anywhere in the UK, are £230, and HGV and plant filters are £299. That covers an off-vehicle machine clean of a filter that has already been removed, flow and back-pressure testing before and after, and an honest report on its condition.
The work around the clean - removal, refit, finding out why it blocked and any parts - is often priced separately from the clean itself. That is why two quotes for "DPF cleaning" can look so different. Here is what the cost of DPF cleaning should cover, and what to ask before you pay anyone.
The cheapest DPF cleaning price is not the cheapest repair if the filter blocks again.
How much does DPF cleaning cost at Auto-Cleanse?
Our DPF cleaning service has three prices, depending on where the filter is coming from and what it came off:
- £210 - within 10 miles of Totnes. We collect the removed filter and return it once it has been cleaned, so there is no courier to book.
- £230 - car and van filters from further afield or by post. Elsewhere in Devon we may still be able to collect, so ask when you call. From anywhere in the UK, fill in the form on our postal DPF page for a job reference, then book the courier yourself through Parcel2Go. We invoice once cleaning is complete and return the filter by tracked next-day delivery.
- £299 - HGV and plant. HGV and plant filters have their own price, and the postal service accepts them too.
Each is a price for cleaning and testing the filter itself, confirmed once we have your vehicle details.
Why are some DPF cleaning quotes so much cheaper?
Three very different things get sold as "DPF cleaning", and they are not priced - or effective - in the same way.
- An additive is a product poured into the tank or sprayed into the filter. At best it helps soot burn off a lightly loaded filter on a healthy engine.
- A forced regeneration is a garage procedure using a diagnostic tool to burn soot off in place. It can help when the filter is soot-loaded and the vehicle allows it, but it leaves ash where it is.
- An off-vehicle clean physically removes soot and ash from the removed filter, and measures the result.
Soot burns; ash does not. So can you clean a DPF without removing it? Only in the sense of burning soot off - the ash stays in the filter until it is cleaned off the vehicle or the filter is renewed. We explain the difference fully in when a DPF needs off-vehicle cleaning.
If a quote looks far cheaper than an off-vehicle clean, ask whether it is really an additive or a forced regeneration.
Compare what is being done to the filter, not just the number on the quote.
What should a DPF cleaning price include?
An off-vehicle machine clean
The filter comes off the vehicle and goes into a dedicated cleaning machine. Ours is a METclean XL MKII, which uses high-pressure water rather than harsh chemicals, followed by controlled hot-air drying. Cleaning off the vehicle is what allows ash - the residue that never burns away - to be physically removed.
Flow and back-pressure testing, before and after
A filter should be tested as it arrives and again once it is clean, on the same equipment. That comparison is the evidence the clean worked. A photo of a bright inlet face is not, because the deposits sit deep inside the channels. We cover each stage in what happens during an off-vehicle DPF clean.
An honest assessment and report
Not every filter can be saved: a cracked, melted or collapsed substrate may not be recoverable. A good service inspects the filter, tells you plainly what it found and reports the test results - including when cleaning is not the right repair.
What is usually priced separately?
These sit outside a filter-cleaning price, so ask about each one.
- Removal and refit labour. This varies more than anything else. On some vehicles the filter is under the floor and comes off with a handful of fixings; on others it sits close to the turbocharger and other parts have to come off first.
- Finding out why it blocked. A diagnostic check of fault codes and live data is separate work from cleaning the filter.
- Gaskets, clamps and fixings. Gaskets, and on many vehicles some clamps and fixings, should be renewed as the workshop manual specifies.
- Resets after refitting. On many vehicles the ECU's stored soot and ash values need resetting or relearning once a cleaned filter goes back on - see resets and checks after a DPF clean.
- Any faulty sensor or pipe. A failed differential pressure sensor, a split pressure pipe or a faulty temperature sensor is a repair in its own right.
- Getting the filter to the cleaner. Within 10 miles of Totnes, our collection and return is part of the £210. For a postal clean you book the courier to us yourself, so allow for that when you compare quotes.
Is it cheaper to clean or replace a DPF?
Cleaning is usually far cheaper than a new filter, for a simple reason: you keep the part you already have. Most DPFs are a ceramic filter inside a steel canister, and many carry a catalyst coating containing precious metals such as platinum. On some vehicles the filter also shares a housing with the oxidation catalyst, so a new unit replaces both. Removal and refit labour is broadly the same either way, so the saving comes from the part.
Replacement is genuinely the answer when the substrate is cracked, melted or collapsed, and heavy oil or coolant contamination can make a filter unsuitable for reuse. That is exactly what pre-clean inspection and flow testing are for: they tell you whether you are paying to clean a serviceable filter or should be buying a new one.
Why the cause matters to the real cost
A filter that blocks again costs you twice. Cleaning removes what is in the filter; it does nothing about whatever filled it. If an EGR fault, worn injectors, a sensor problem or a journey pattern that never lets a regeneration finish is still there, the clean filter soon loads up and blocks again.
That is why the real cost of DPF cleaning includes finding the cause. We explain the common reasons in why a DPF blocks again after regeneration. In Devon, our paid DPF diagnostics check reads the codes and live data, usually takes around an hour, and normally means bringing the vehicle to Totnes.
Questions to ask before you pay anyone
- Is the filter cleaned off the vehicle, and by what method?
- Will it be flow tested before and after, and will I see the results?
- What happens if the filter turns out to be cracked or melted?
- Does the price include removal, refit, gaskets and the reset, or are those extra?
- Has anyone established why it blocked, and will that be fixed?
- Is the price confirmed for my exact vehicle?
If anyone suggests removing the filter instead of cleaning it, walk away. On a vehicle built with a DPF, removal is not a legal repair, and the vehicle will fail its MOT if the tester finds the filter has been removed.

Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to clean a DPF filter in the UK?
At Auto-Cleanse, cleaning a removed DPF costs £210 within 10 miles of Totnes, £230 for car and van filters from elsewhere in the UK including postal, and £299 for HGV and plant filters, confirmed with your vehicle details. Other quotes vary because providers include different things. Our price covers cleaning and testing a filter that has already been removed; removal, refit, diagnosis and any parts are not part of it.
Is it worth cleaning a DPF instead of replacing it?
If the substrate is intact, cleaning is usually far cheaper than a new filter and restores flow through a serviceable filter. If it is cracked, melted or collapsed, replacement is the right repair. Testing before cleaning tells you which.
Does the price include taking the DPF off?
Our price is for cleaning a filter that has already been removed, by you or your garage. If you need help with removal and refit, call us to discuss current availability.
How long does DPF cleaning take?
Turnaround is fast, and same day where possible. Locally, filters that reach us before 10am are often cleaned and tested the same working day, though we cannot promise it. Postal filters go back by tracked next-day delivery once cleaned - ask us about timing when you book.
The takeaway
The cost of DPF cleaning only makes sense once you know what is included. Look for an off-vehicle clean with before-and-after testing and an honest report, check what removal, diagnosis and parts will add, and make sure the cause is found so you only pay once.
