Stage 1 remapping in Birmingham

Birmingham's Clean Air Zone is a Class D charging zone covering the city centre inside the A4540 Middleway ring road, though not the Middleway itself, and it applies to both cars and vans. Inside the zone or out of it, Stage 1 remapping on a diesel is felt as mid-range torque: joining the M6 or the A38(M) from a slip road and overtaking on the A45 become noticeably easier. The change is to the fuel, boost and timing settings, within the engine's limits. It does not alter the emissions standard, so a car or van the zone charges today is charged after a remap too, and one it does not charge stays that way.

Driving in and around Birmingham

At the end of June 2026 the Birmingham council area had 411,153 privately kept cars. Only 3.6% were plug-ins, one of the lowest shares of the 104 largest towns we cover, and 27.1% were diesel, about 111,000 cars. In the 2021 Census, 32.9% of households in the Birmingham built-up area had no car, above the England and Wales figure of 23.3%, yet 46.2% of working residents drove to work. In 2025 MOT tests across B postcodes, the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter were the most tested diesel vans, with the Volkswagen Golf and BMW 3 Series top among cars. A loaded Sprinter or Transit gains stronger pull at low revs from Stage 1, though the gearbox and clutch limits still set how far a van's remap should go.
